The early life
James Stephen Donaldson[a] was born on 7 May 1998[31] in Wichita, Kansas.[32] He grew up mostly in a mobile home in Greenville, North Carolina with his brother CJ.[33][34][35] She moved them too often and under au pairs because of her parents working long hours and in the military. Her parents divorced in 2007.[34] In 2016, Donaldson graduated from Greenville Christian Academy, a good little private evangelical Christian secondary in the area. He attended with a stint at East Carolina University before dropping out.[36][37]
Rising to Fame (2017–2020)

In January 2017, Donaldson released a nearly daylong video of himself counting down to 100,000, which became his viral breakthrough video.[52] The challenge took him 40 hours, with some episodes sped up to "keep it under 24 hours."[53] Donaldson gained fame during this period with stunts, such as trying to break glass using a hundred megaphones, watching paint drying for an hour ,[37] an attempt to stay submerged for 24 hours, which ended up failing due to health issues, and an unsuccessful attempt to spin a fidget spinner for a day.[54] In 2018, Donaldson donated $1 million through his bizarre stunts, which earned him the title of "YouTube's biggest philanthropist".[36]
During the PewDiePie vs T-Series rivalry in 2018, a competition to become the most subscribed channel on YouTube, Donaldson bought billboards and several television and radio ads to help PewDiePie gain more subscribers than T-Series. [55][56] During Super Bowl LIII, he bought several chairs for himself and his team, whose shirts bore the words "Sub 2 PewDiePie."[57][58]
In March 2019, Donaldson organized and filmed a real-life battle royale tournament in Los Angeles with a $200,000 prize pool (two matches were played, making the matches a $100,000 payout for each match) in partnership with Apex Legends. Donaldson was accused of using counterfeit currency in his video titled "I Opened A FREE BANK", released on November 23, 2019.[36] He later explained that he used counterfeit money to avoid participants' safety concerns and that participants received real checks after the shooting.[36]
In April 2020, Donaldson streamed a rock, paper, scissors contest featuring 32 influencers and a $250,000 grand prize, which at the time became YouTube's most-watched live Original event with 662,000 competing viewers.[1] 61] The event was won by Nadeshot.[62] In October 2020, Donaldson hosted another influencer tournament featuring 24 contestants with a grand prize of $300,000. The contest was won by the D'Amelio family, who sparked controversy over allegations of cheating.[63]

On January 1, 2021, Donaldson released the video "Youtube Rewind 2020, Thank God It's Over".[64] In Donaldson's video, he explains that he always believed that YouTubers "should get more say in Rewind," and with this in mind, he decided to call "hundreds of YouTubers".[64] At the end of the video, Donaldson gives a shout out to PewDiePie, citing him and his 2018 Rewind as the inspiration for Donaldson's Rewind.[64] A month later, Donaldson signed Facebook and Snapchat content distribution deals with Jellysmack.[65][66]
In November 2021, Donaldson posts "$456,000 Squid Game In Real Life!", a recreation of the survival drama that streams the Squid Game television series in real life. The video featured 456 contestants vying for a $456,000 cash prize.[67] The video has over 466 million views as of January 25, 2023,[68] making it Donaldson's most viewed YouTube video and making it one of the most viewed YouTube videos of 2021.[69] A review of the video by Vice claimed it "misunderstood Squid Game's anti-capitalist message".[70] Nevertheless, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has done well with recreations and parodies of the series.[71]
In December 2021, Donaldson held a third influencer contest consisting of 15 contestants with a grand prize of $1,000,000.[72][73][74] In January 2022, Forbes ranked Donaldson as the highest paid YouTube creator, earning an estimated $54 million by 2021. Forbes said his income in 2021 would put him 40th on the 2020 Forbes Celebrity 100, he found as much money as Vin Diesel and Lewis Hamilton did in 2020.[75][76]
